MTP Zeolite Catalysts for Methanol-to-Propylene
Methanol-to-Propylene (MTP) is a variant of MTO that maximises propylene yield by operating at higher temperature and with a ZSM-5-based catalyst optimised for propylene selectivity. Unlike MTO, which uses either SAPO-34 or ZSM-5, MTP is essentially a ZSM-5-only process — the catalyst and operating conditions are tuned together to shift the product distribution toward propylene.
ZSM-5 is the catalyst of choice for MTP because its 10-MR MFI channels provide shape-selective constraints that favour propylene formation while its tunable Si/Al ratio allows optimisation of acid site density for maximum propylene yield with minimal aromatics and C₄+ byproducts.
Which ZSM-5 Grade for MTP?
| Objective | Recommended ZSM-5 | Key Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum propylene yield | Si/Al 100-300 | Suppresses hydrogen transfer, favours olefin production |
| Longer catalyst life | Si/Al 200-500 | Higher SAR reduces coke formation rate |
| Balanced activity and selectivity | Si/Al 50-150 | Higher acid density for conversion, balanced with propylene selectivity |
Key Selection Criteria
Si/Al ratio is the primary optimisation parameter. Higher SAR (100-300) reduces acid site density, suppressing hydrogen transfer reactions that consume propylene to form paraffins and aromatics. MTP typically operates at higher SAR than general MTO ZSM-5 because the higher temperature favours propylene in the olefin interconversion network.
Crystal size affects diffusion and product selectivity. Smaller ZSM-5 crystals (100-500 nm) reduce diffusion path length, lowering secondary reactions of propylene to aromatics and coke. Nano-ZSM-5 is preferred for MTP when maximum propylene selectivity is the goal.
Operating conditions: MTP typically runs at 450-550 °C, atmospheric pressure, with methanol WHSV of 1-4 h⁻¹. The higher temperature compared to MTO shifts the olefin equilibrium toward propylene at the expense of some ethylene. Propylene selectivities of 40-50% are achievable with optimised ZSM-5 under MTP conditions.
